Chapel Oaks Volunteer Fire Department

Thursday, August 17, 2017 The members and officers of The Milton Fire Department are saddened to announce the passing of Past Chief Fred Kurtz. Fred's passing was very sudden and unexpected by everyone. He joined the former Goodwill Hose Company in 1969. In his 48 year career with the department he held nearly every position including Chief of Department. He was very instrumental in the merger of the 3 separate fire companies into The Milton Fire Department Inc. which took place in 1998. Fred was a 1971 graduate of Milton High School and had served in the Navy for 30 years, retiring as a Master Chief. While serving with distinction he helped implement and lead a new unit for augmentation by Aviation Boatswain's Mates for Fire & Emergency Rescue Crews as the Senior Enlisted Leader/Executive Officer. He had worked for Weis Market in his early years, AC&F for 30 years, and Norfolk Southern for 13 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Muncy and the F&AM Lodge 256, Milton, an active member of the Milton Fire Department for 48 years beginning with the Goodwill Hose Company in 1969. With the Milton Department he had served as Asst. Chief, Deputy Chief, and Chief of Dept. from 1992 to 1999. He was the treasurer of the Fireman's Relief Assoc. of Milton from 1979 to 1982 and from 1989 to present. He was awarded Firefighter of the Year in 1986, Swisher in 2000, and MFD Service Award in 2001. Our sincere condolences go out to his family in this very sad time. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Services will be August 22 at 11am at Bethany UMC on South Front Street Milton, with burial at Harmony cemetery.
